The clinic itself tells you a lot. Is it clean? Is the equipment modern? Can they do blood work, X-rays, and ultrasound in-house, or do they send everything out? In-house diagnostics mean faster answers and better outcomes in urgent situations.

Transparency on pricing is non-negotiable. A good clinic will provide clear pricing before any procedure. They will explain what is included. They will not upsell unnecessary treatments. If a clinic cannot tell you what something costs before they do it, that is a red flag.

How the clinic handles communication matters. Do they follow up after visits? Can you reach them easily with questions? Do they explain things in plain language or hide behind jargon? Your vet should be someone you feel comfortable asking questions of, even the ones you think might sound silly.

The way the staff handle your animal is the most important indicator. Watch how the nurses and vets interact with pets in the waiting area. Are they gentle? Patient? Do they get down to the animal's level? A clinic that rushes animals through is optimised for volume, not care.

Ask about emergency protocols. What happens if your pet needs care outside clinic hours? Do they have an emergency line? Do they refer to a 24-hour hospital? Knowing this before an emergency happens is critical.
