Grooming and Lifestyle: Keeping Your Pet Comfortable in the UAE

In the UAE, grooming is not vanity. It is healthcare. The combination of extreme heat, humidity, sand, and air conditioning creates specific challenges for skin, coat, ears, and paws that pet parents in temperate climates never face.

Every dog needs regular grooming, but the frequency and type depends on breed, coat type, and lifestyle. Short-coated breeds like Labradors and Beagles need bathing every 4 to 6 weeks with regular brushing. Long-coated breeds like Golden Retrievers and Poodles need professional grooming every 4 to 6 weeks. Double-coated breeds like Huskies (surprisingly common in the UAE) need specialised deshedding treatments.

Cat grooming is equally important, though often overlooked. Long-haired breeds like Persians and Maine Coons require daily brushing to prevent matting. Even short-haired cats benefit from regular grooming to reduce hairballs and monitor skin health. Most cats do not need bathing unless medically necessary.

Ear care is critical in the UAE. The combination of heat, humidity, and swimming (for water-loving breeds) creates ideal conditions for ear infections. Check ears weekly for redness, odour, or discharge. Breeds with floppy ears (Cocker Spaniels, Basset Hounds) are particularly susceptible.

Paw care in the UAE requires year-round attention. In summer, pavement temperatures can exceed 70 degrees Celsius. In winter, sand and salt can dry and crack paw pads. Check paws after every walk. Use paw balm to keep pads supple. If your dog lifts a paw or limps on a walk, the ground is too hot.

Dental hygiene between professional cleanings is straightforward but often neglected. Daily tooth brushing with pet-safe toothpaste is ideal. Dental chews and water additives can supplement but not replace brushing. Never use human toothpaste. It is not made to be swallowed, and some brands contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Use a pet-safe toothpaste instead.

Professional grooming should feel safe and comfortable for your pet. A good groomer will never rush, will handle your animal gently, and will flag any skin issues, lumps, or abnormalities they notice during the session. Grooming is often the first place health problems are spotted.
