Parasite Prevention in the UAE: Fleas, Ticks, and Heartworm

In temperate climates, parasite prevention is seasonal. In the UAE, it is year-round. The warm, humid conditions support flea, tick, and mosquito populations twelve months a year. Monthly preventive treatment is not a suggestion. It is a requirement for responsible pet ownership in this region.

Ticks are the most dangerous parasites your pet will encounter in the UAE. The brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) is endemic across the Emirates. It transmits ehrlichiosis and babesiosis, both of which can be fatal if untreated. Ehrlichiosis attacks white blood cells, causing fever, lethargy, weight loss, and bleeding disorders. Babesiosis destroys red blood cells, causing severe anaemia.

Check your pet for ticks after every walk, particularly if you walk in grassy areas, parks, or near construction sites. Run your hands over their entire body, paying attention to the ears, between the toes, around the neck, and in the groin area. Ticks attach firmly and can be difficult to spot, especially on dark-coated animals.

If you find a tick, remove it with fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull straight out with steady pressure. Do not twist, burn, or apply substances to the tick. These methods can cause the tick to regurgitate into the wound, increasing infection risk. Clean the area with antiseptic after removal.

Fleas are less dangerous than ticks but more persistent. A single flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day. Those eggs fall off your pet into carpets, bedding, and furniture, where they develop into larvae and pupae. Pupae can survive in the environment for months, emerging as adults when they detect vibration, warmth, or carbon dioxide. Treating your pet without treating the environment is futile.

Flea allergy dermatitis is one of the most common skin conditions in UAE pets. A single flea bite can trigger intense itching, hair loss, and skin infection in allergic animals. Prevention is far easier and cheaper than treating an established infestation and its secondary complications.

Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes and is a growing concern in the UAE. The parasite lodges in the heart and pulmonary arteries, where it grows up to 30 centimetres in length. Left untreated, heartworm causes heart failure and death. Treatment of established heartworm disease is expensive, risky, and requires weeks of strict cage rest. Monthly prevention costs a fraction of treatment.

Prevention options include monthly topical treatments (spot-on), monthly oral tablets, and long-acting injectable products (lasting 6 to 12 months). Your vet will recommend the best option based on your pet's species, size, lifestyle, and risk factors. Many modern products combine flea, tick, and heartworm prevention in a single monthly treatment.

Cats are also at risk. Indoor cats can be bitten by mosquitoes that enter the home. Cat fleas are common year-round. While ticks are less common in cats than dogs, they are not immune. Discuss a parasite prevention plan with your vet for all pets in your household.
