Maltipoo traits

What they brought with them.

Tap a card to see what is going on.

Maltipoo, a red adult up on the back legs by the sofa, asking to be lifted

At home

Why does my Maltipoo follow me everywhere?

Room to room all day, and asking to be picked up the moment you sit down.

What's going onThe Maltese side had no job except being with someone, so following you is a Maltipoo working as intended. Distress when you leave is different, and a reason to contact your vet.

Maltipoo, a black adult sitting up on a sofa cushion by a sunny window, watching the room

At home

Why does my Maltipoo bark so much?

A sharp bark from the sofa whenever they feel left out of what is going on.

What's going onThe Maltese side still wants to be part of everything, and when they are bored, they let you know. Reward quiet, not barking, and give them something to do before they have to ask.

Maltipoo, a black and tan adult on a lap having the dog's teeth cleaned with a finger brush

At home

A small mouth with a lot in it

Bad breath on a goodnight cuddle, or a biscuit dropped and left on the floor.

What's going onDental disease is the first risk on a Maltipoo's health record at every stage. Bad breath or dropped food is their teeth talking, not fussiness, so brush every day from the week they come home.

Maltipoo in Dubai, a chocolate adult walking in a harness on a palm-lined street in early light

At home

Why does my Maltipoo honk like a goose?

A honking cough when they pull towards a friend on the lead, or get excited at the door.

What's going onCollapsed Trachea (a weak windpipe) is on their health record from puppyhood. Film the honk and show your vet, and clip the lead to a harness, never the collar.

Maltipoo, a silver adult lying on a cream sofa while a hand combs behind one ear

At home

Low shedding, not allergy-free

Hardly a hair on the sofa, and a knot behind the ears by the end of the week.

What's going onThe coat holds its loose hair until you brush it out, which is why it mats. No dog is guaranteed to be allergy-free: a 2012 study found no less dog allergen in homes with Poodles and Labradoodles than with other breeds.

Maltipoo, close portrait of a white adult's face, eyes and muzzle in soft light

At home

Why does my Maltipoo have tear stains?

Brown marks running down from the corners of the eyes, easy to spot on a pale face.

What's going onTear staining is on their health record from puppyhood. Wipe under their eyes every day and keep the hair there short. Squinting or redness is worth a visit to your vet.

A Maltipoo in Dubai

The bit nobody tells you.

Their day

Built for: Company, above all from the Maltese side.

In Dubai: Often alone for part of the day.

Their brain

Built for: A Poodle bred to work beside a person.

In Dubai: Give a small, clever dog nothing to do, and they find their voice.

Their mouth

Built for: Small, and full of teeth.

In Dubai: Needs more everyday care than their size suggests.

The barking at the door mostly comes from that gap.

Most of us cannot be with them all day, but we can give them something to think about, and the ten things below are how.

Your plan is built around their breed: the health risks for a Maltipoo at every age, and the care that goes with each one.

Daily care for a Maltipoo

Ten things that make their life better.

Many of them are free, and most matter at every age.

  1. A Toy and a Miniature Poodle parent make different sizes of Maltipoo.

    Before they come home

    Free

    Why

A Toy and a Miniature Poodle parent make different sizes of Maltipoo.

    What to do

Ask the breeder which Poodle was used, how big both parents are, and what health tests they had, with their teeth and knees in particular. Keep the answers, and bring them to their first vet visit.

  2. A busy mind is a quieter one.

Every age, easier puzzles from 7 years

    Free

    Why

A busy mind is a quieter one.

    What to do

Two five-minute sessions a day: a trick, or part of their dinner in a puzzle feeder. Reward quiet, not barking.

  3. The Maltese side was bred only for company.

Every age, most of all from 6 months to 2 years

Free, or the cost of a walker or daycare

    Why

The Maltese side was bred only for company.

    What to do

If they are alone for more than a few hours, arrange a visit or daycare. Keep leaving and coming home calm. If they are distressed when you go, contact your vet.

  4. A fluffy coat hides weight, and weight presses on their windpipe.

Every age, most of all from 4 years

    Free

    Why

A fluffy coat hides weight, and weight presses on their windpipe.

    What to do

Weigh them once a month and write it down. Once a week, feel their ribs through the coat and look at their skin.

  5. Their soft coat mats fast, and mats hide itchy skin.

Every age, hardest from 6 months to 2 years

Under AED 150 for a brush and comb

    Why

Their soft coat mats fast, and mats hide itchy skin.

    What to do

Brush and comb to the skin every day or two. Keep the hair round their eyes short. Book the groomer on a regular schedule and keep to it.

  6. The Poodle side likes to carry things.

Every age, softer toys from 7 years

    Under AED 50

    Why

The Poodle side likes to carry things.

    What to do

Keep a small soft toy that is theirs. When they take something else, swap it for a treat rather than chasing them.

  7. Collapsed Trachea (a weak windpipe) is on their record, and heat is hard on a small dog.

Every age, most of all puppies and from 7 years

Under AED 150 for a harnessIn your plan

    Why

Collapsed Trachea (a weak windpipe) is on their record, and heat is hard on a small dog.

    What to do

Clip the lead to a harness, never the collar. From May to September, walk before sunrise and after dark. Put the back of your hand on the pavement for five seconds first: if you cannot hold it there, they cannot walk on it. A tracheal evaluation (a windpipe exam) is in your plan from age two to four.

  8. Tear staining and eye irritation are on their record from puppyhood.

Every age, most of all up to 4 years

Under AED 50 a month for cotton padsIn your plan

    Why

Tear staining and eye irritation are on their record from puppyhood.

    What to do

Wipe under each eye with a damp cotton pad, a fresh one for each eye. Squinting, redness or thick discharge is worth a visit to your vet. Eye care and tear stain management are in your plan from six months to four years.

  9. Dental disease is the first health risk for a Maltipoo at every stage.

Every age, from the week they come home

Under AED 100 for a brush and toothpasteIn your plan

    Why

Dental disease is the first health risk for a Maltipoo at every stage.

    What to do

Use a dog toothbrush and dog toothpaste every day, never human toothpaste. At six months, look for baby teeth still sitting next to adult ones. A dental cleaning every six months is in your plan from six months to four years.

  10. Patellar Luxation (a slipping kneecap) is on their record from puppy to prime adult.

Every age, most of all up to 7 years

Free to AED 1,000 for rugs and a stepIn your plan

    Why

Patellar Luxation (a slipping kneecap) is on their record from puppy to prime adult.

    What to do

Put rugs down on marble and a step up to the sofa, and lift them down rather than let them jump. A skip on a back leg is worth telling your vet about. An orthopaedic evaluation (a joint and bone exam) is in your plan from six months to four years.

Four of these are in your plan. The rest you can do at home.

Getting a Maltipoo puppy in Dubai

Before they come home.

Maltipoo, a black adult standing side-on on a terracotta villa terrace at dusk

Toy and mini Maltipoos

Which Poodle, and what size

A Maltipoo has a Maltese for one parent and a Toy or Miniature Poodle for the other. That is what people mean by a toy or a mini Maltipoo: the Poodle's size goes a long way to setting the size of the dog. Every puppy takes a different share of each parent, so ask the breeder which Poodle was used and how big both parents are.

Colours

White, or any Poodle shade

A Maltipoo can take the Maltese's white, or one of the Poodle's shades, from pale cream and apricot to silver, brown and black. The adult coat comes in between six months and two years, and that is when you see which parent shows through.

Before you commit

Ask about teeth, knees and eyes

Ask the breeder what health tests both parents had, and about their teeth, knees and eyes in particular. A Maltipoo can inherit risks from either side, so bring the answers to their first vet visit.

When to see a vet

When it is not behaviour.

Maltipoo, a calm black and tan adult sitting as a vet in taupe scrubs kneels alongside, a hand on the dog's side

Some of this is not a training problem, and treating it like one wastes time your dog may not have. If they are distressed when you leave, if they growl or guard their food, their toys or you, if they are frightened on the lead, or if anything about them changes suddenly at any age, contact your vet the same day. A tip from a website, ours included, is not the answer. If it cannot wait, contact your nearest emergency vet now.

With a Maltipoo, watch their mouth, their breathing and their body. A Maltipoo who goes off their food, chews on one side or paws at their face may have sore teeth. A honking cough when they are excited is their windpipe. From four years, trembling all over, when they are not cold or frightened, can be White Shaker Syndrome (a tremor condition seen in small white dogs). From seven years, a cough or tiring early can be their heart, and heart disease is on their record from that age. Bloat (GDV, a twisted stomach) can happen in any dog, though it is most common in large, deep-chested breeds. A swollen, tight belly, retching with nothing coming up, sudden restlessness or drooling is an emergency: contact your vet now.

Your lap is theirs. If they won't let you near their teeth there, tell your vet.

The Maltese is one of the oldest lap dogs there is, a small white dog kept across Europe for no reason except company. The American Kennel Club recognised it in 1888.

Maltipoo questions

The ones you type at midnight.

Most of these get asked late at night, by someone watching their dog and not sure what they are seeing.

Maltipoo in Dubai, a cream adult asleep against a pet parent on the sofa at night, city lights behind
Is a Maltipoo a Maltese Poodle mix?

Yes, a Maltipoo is a Maltese Poodle mix, with a Toy or Miniature Poodle as the Poodle parent. They are gentle and playful, with a soft, low-shedding coat, and happy to share a flat with you.

What is the Maltipoo lifespan?

Maltipoos usually live 12 to 16 years. Their teeth need daily care through all of those years, because dental disease is the first thing to watch for at every age.

Is a Maltipoo hypoallergenic?

No dog is guaranteed to be allergy-free, and that includes the Maltipoo. The coat sheds less because loose hair stays in it, and a 2012 study found no less dog allergen in homes with Poodles and Labradoodles than in homes with other dogs.

How big is a full grown Maltipoo?

A fully grown Maltipoo usually weighs between 1.8 and 7 kg, depending on which parent they take after and the size of the Poodle. A Toy Poodle and a Maltese both weigh about 1.8 to 2.7 kg, and a Miniature Poodle 4.5 to 7 kg.

What health problems can a Maltipoo inherit?

A Maltipoo's own record leads with teeth, knees, tear staining and a weak windpipe. They can also inherit from either side: gradual loss of sight and seizures from the Poodle side, and low blood sugar in young puppies, which is on both the Maltese and the Toy Poodle records.

Why does my Maltipoo have tear stains?

In a Maltipoo, tear staining is on their health record from puppyhood. Wipe under their eyes every day with a damp cotton pad, a fresh one for each eye, and keep the hair there short. Squinting, redness or thick discharge is worth a visit to your vet.

Why does my Maltipoo honk when they pull on the lead?

A honking cough in a Maltipoo, when they pull or get excited, can be Collapsed Trachea (a weak windpipe). Film it and show your vet, walk them on a harness rather than a collar, and keep them lean.

What is the best Maltipoo haircut for Dubai?

The best Maltipoo haircut keeps the coat free of mats and the hair round their eyes short. Ask your vet what length of summer clip suits their coat in the heat, and brush to the skin every day or two between groomer visits.

Can a Maltipoo live in Dubai?

Yes, a Maltipoo is well suited to flat living in Dubai, with care in the heat. Walk them before sunrise and after dark from May to September, on a harness, and plan their day around company.
